Maialen Galarraga studied for a Master’s degree in environmental philosophy and a PhD in the philosophy of technology at Lancaster University, where she now works as a research associate on the HyRiM project on cybersecurity. She has also been a research assistant on two projects funded by Research Councils UK (RCUK): “Integrated Assessment of Geoengineering Proposals” and “CaTalyST: Citizens Transforming Society.” Her research interests include knowledge production, ontological responsibility, climate engineering, and the environment. Maialen became interested in the Anthropocene as a result of her work with Bron Szerszynski on ontological responsibility in the field of climate engineering. She is interested in the way knowledge is currently being produced in the field of climate engineering, as an emergent technology, but also in the broader ways in which humans interpret their pasts and imagine (and shape) their futures. She has found that questions about climate engineering inevitably spill over into thinking the Anthropocene.
