Anders Bjørn is a PhD student at the Technical University of Denmark working with the integration of planetary boundaries and related measures in lifecycle assessment (LCA). LCA is a tool used to quantify impacts on the environment from products or systems, with the aim of identifying solutions that have the lowest environmental impact or drawing attention to the most harmful processes. Since LCA is a comparative tool, its modeled environmental impacts are commonly expressed in metrics that are hard to interpret in an absolute sense; this means that the size of an impact is compared with its corresponding “safe operating space.” By using planetary boundaries as reference information in LCA, absolute impact assessments are possible.
