Ethnographic vignette by postgraduate student Kristiane Fehrs reflecting on the visible qualities of water during a visit to the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve, located southeast of Berlin, in December 2019.
The water here has turned brown due to an inflow of groundwater containing iron from the Lusatia region, where open-pit mining has an effect on the water quality downriver.
